Lesson Samples, Spring 2012
Introduction to Prezi
Because students planned to present as a group, they were looking for a quick and easy way to create a display that all members could access. I suggested the use of Prezi, which is free for students and is also easily shared between multiple people. The session was spent having everyone sign up on the website, learning the basics, listening to a brief overview on sharing and creating slides from me, and then exploring the various techniques and applications on their own. See the final results here!
Genograms
First, students learned the standard symbols used to create a genogram. I created a couple of simple examples from families I have worked with in the past. Then students threw out scenarios and their peers attempted to draw it out on the board. Finally, students worked in pairs to create each other's family genogram (or another scenario, if the student wanted to maintain privacy), which they turned in for participation credit.
Apply Theories to Narrative
Students watched part of an episode from "That 70's Show" in which the character of Donna smokes and fails a class on purpose. We then discussed how various perspectives would explain Donna's behavior and what solutions each would suggest. We also discussed the application of Donna's story to Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory and students created a diagram of the results.
