Spring Term Mentoring Goal
To seek best practices to enhance the quality of student participation in small group discussions, project work, and presentations in both class and mentor sessions.
Goal 1
I will review literature about small groups (i.e., stages of group development, best practices in structuring group projects, leadership of groups, etc.) and use this information in leading sessions focused on small group work.
I read the following books & journals:
Aggarwal, Praveen (12/01/2008). "Social Loafing on Group Projects". Journal of marketing education (0273-4753), 30 (3), p. 255.
Chen, M., & Ryback, C. J. (2004). Group leadership skills. Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole-Thompson.

Goal 2
Using my research on groups, I will assist the groups in strategizing in order to break down the group lesson into more manageable pieces and schedule themselves accordingly.
Because the literature states that smaller groups chosen by peers are more effective, I worked with students in sessions to divide the group assignment. I guided them as they divided up into smaller groups, asking them to consider their own interests, current relationships with their peers, and the amount of time they had to devote to the project.
